Floodwater entered block headquarter town of Kalayansinghpur in Rayagada district forcing many inhabitants to take shelter in the first floor and roof.

Meanwhile, Indian Air Force choppers were pressed into rescue and relief operations in Kalyansinghpur block, where people are trapped on rooftops of submerged houses.

While Thuamul-Rampur area of Kalahandi received 260 mm rainfall in past 24 hours, Rayagada recorded 189.88 mm rainfall during the same period causing flash flood in Nagabali and Kalyan rivers. Authorities are engaged in rescue and relief operations since Sunday.

Even as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday said the flood situation in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts of Odisha is improving, the Met Office warned of likely heavy rains in the next 24 hours in the state.

"No flood-like situation is prevalent in River Vamsadhara, but if rains continue, there are chances of floods in Vamsadhara areas too".

Several areas in Kalahandi district were also severely affected by the floods caused by incessant rains.

Major roads were damaged and several bridges, including a railway overbridge, were washed away in the floods.

ODRAF, CRPF and fire services units have rushed to the worst affected Kalyansinghpur and Rayagada block of the district to expedite relief and rescue operations.

It is, therefore, not possible to move the food and other assistances for the people in affected areas.

Besides, many people have been stranded in hard situations on hill tops.
