The United Arab Emirates orchestrated the hacking of Qatari government news and social media sites in order to post incendiary false quotes attributed to Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, in late May that sparked the ongoing upheaval between Qatar and its neighbors, according to USA intelligence officials.

On June 5, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt announced that they were severing diplomatic relations with Doha, citing the Emir's comments. It quoted him praising Hamas and Iran - ideological foes of other members of the Gulf Co-operation Council.

What is true is Qatar's behavior.

US intelligence agencies confirmed in May that the UAE government discussed a plan to breach Qatar government websites, according to the Post.

This was followed nearly immediately by a trade embargo and the closing of all air, land and see borders to Qatar, effectively leaving Qatar in its current isolated state. "Inciting violence, encouraging radicalization, and undermining the stability of its neighbors", he said in the statement.

The agreement between Doha and Washington was signed during U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson's four-day mediation mission to try and end the rift between Qatar and its neighbours, now in its second month.

With US spy agencies now apparently briefing against them, Qatar's antagonists may conclude US sympathy for their position is rapidly dwindling.

"What we know now is that Qatar is admitting that the list is worthy, that the list needs to be looked at, and that they need to change some of their laws to ensure that there is a proper process to cover this list", he said.
