31-year-old Wayne Rooney has announced his retirement from worldwide football.

Rooney's statement read: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches".

"He probably is", Lineker said, referring to whether Rooney is under-appreciated.

"However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now made a decision to retire for good from global football", Rooney said in a statement on Wednesday.

Kalinic first moved to Italian football back in 2015, scoring 33 goals in 83 appearances since. Milan won 3-0 away to Crotone in their opening game of the season on Sunday.

Jagielka lauded Rooney and said England's all-time leading goalscorer, who has not played for his country since November a year ago, "looks as good as ever" ahead of the Three Lions' upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia.

Lineker, who scored 48 times in his 80 global appearances, said Rooney had too often during his worldwide career carried the burden of being the national side's only world-class player. According to reports, English captain took this decision after consultations with manager Gareth Southgate.

"Every time I was selected was a real privilege but I believe now is the time to bow out", Rooney was quoted as saying. I have been lucky enough to play with Wayne a number of times and he looks as good as ever now, as hungry as ever and hopefully that is a good sign for us.

"It's with sadness that we see Wayne call time on his global career but we respect his decision and expect to see him continue to contribute to Everton and the rest of the football world for many years to come". One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side.

Rooney also played for England at three World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014 and went on to appear at a further two Euros for England in 2012 and 2016.

However, Eriksson - who gave Rooney his debut in February 2003 - has called on the Everton forward to reconsider his call to end his national team career at the age of 31.

Already the record outfield appearance holder with 119 caps, he was in sight of Peter Shilton's record of 125.
