Mary Berry returns to judging soggy bottoms on BBC's Britain's Best Cook

The Great British Bake Off is now merely a shadow in her mind, as The Radio Times reports the former judge will be "returning to her first love" and acting as lead judge on a new TV competition series, Britain's Best Cook.

The former Great British Bake Off star will be the lead judge on Britain's Best Cook which will see talented home cooks go head to head to deliver flawless versions of classic British dishes.

The series will see 10 contestants battle it out to prove they're No. 1 when it comes to classic British fare.

She said recently that she loved judging and wanted to do it again, but couldn't bear the thought of doing so on a television show that might compete with The Great British Bake Off.

Berry became a national treasure thanks to Bake Off and, alongside hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, refused to move to Channel 4 when the broadcaster paid £75m for the rights to the show.

It will also have two judges, although who will replace Paul Hollywood as Mary's sidekick has yet to be confirmed.

"This series is going to encourage proper home cooking which I have always championed and I can not wait to start".

There is no word as yet when Britain's Best Cook will debut on the BBC.

But the BBC hit back, with one insider insisting: "These are completely different shows and they should focus on recreating the magic they had the BBC rather than worrying about what we are doing". When the show returns later this year it will be hosted by Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.
