Missing engagement ring found on garden carrot 13 years later

In the case of 84-year-old Mary Grams, the phrase could not be more pertinent as she was recently reunited with her long-lost engagement ring - and you won't believe where it was unearthed.

Once a keen gardener, Mary assumed that she lost it pulling weeds in the garden of their home in the western province of Alberta.

"I asked my husband if he recognized the ring". More than 13 years later, the rogue ring was found by her son Brian Grams' wife (the pair now live on the property.) "My wife was digging carrots for supper, and I guess she came up with a carrot that had something on it", Brian said.

Grams's husband Norman had given her the ring in 1951, but rather than tell him that she lost it, she just replaced it.

Amazingly, the carrot grew straight through the ring.

Instead, it resurfaced 13 years later under very unusual circumstances. The farm has been in the family for 105 years.

This is not the first time someone has found a diamond ring on a carrot. She said that while it looked pretty weird, it was interesting and that she had never seen anything like that before.

The discovery was bittersweet, however, as the elderly woman's husband died five years ago, a month after the couple's 60th wedding anniversary.

The carrot looks a bit like a finger wearing a ring, she said. Once the carrot had been cut away from the ring, though, Mary was in no doubt that it was hers.
