Phoenix Mayor Urges Trump to Delay Rally in His City

Mayor Greg Stanton, a Democrat who has been in office since 2012, said he hopes that "sound judgment prevails" and that the president abandons plans for an event next Tuesday at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton urged Donald Trump to put off his upcoming campaign rally and instead focus on cleaning up the mess he's made over the past several days following the racial driven violence and hatred in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Grijalva said he is also concerned that Trump will pardon former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio during his visit to Phoenix.

"I am disappointed that President Trump has chosen to hold a campaign rally as our nation is still healing from the tragic events in Charlottesville", the statement read.

"Join me at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 22nd in Phoenix, Arizona at the Phoenix Convention Center!" the tweet from the president read. Next week's rally will be his first in the West.

On July 31, Arpaio was found guilty of misdemeanor criminal contempt for defying a state judge's order to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal aliens.

Trump's responses to the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., have been widely criticized. He faces up to six months in prison.

Stanton said he is "disappointed" that Trump has chose to use this moment to hold a rally, particularly as the nation is still reeling from the disturbing events in Virginia.
