Princes William and Harry have spoken candidly about the death of their mother, Princess Diana, in an interview marking 20 years since she was killed in a vehicle crash, paying tribute to the actions of their father in breaking the tragic news.

"I just remember hiding behind my fringe basically, at a time when I had a lot of hair, and my head's down a lot - so I'm hiding behind my fringe".

"And William and I know that, we've been told that numerous times by people that know that was the case".

Prince William also spoke about the Queen's decision to keep her grandsons at Balmoral following Diana's death - something for which she weathered heavy public criticism.

"One of the hardest things for a parent to have to do is to tell your children that your other parent has died", he said, before continuing to heap praise on his dad.

She says: "I had bulimia for a number of years, and that's like a secret disease". It was like nothing you can really describe, it was very unusual.

Harry said "those photographs" subsequently made their way to news desks in the United Kingdom.

William added that there was "this element of duty and responsibility that you have to do things you don't want to do".

"Our grandmother deliberately removed the newspapers and things like that, so there was nothing in the house at all, so we didn't know what was going on".

He said she did it to make sure the brothers "had the privacy to mourn and to collect our thoughts".

The documentary also reveals the duo's - then aged 15 and 12 - conflicted feelings at walking behind their mother's coffin, having to greet the screaming and grieving crowds after her death.

But reflecting on the procession again, Harry told the BBC he was "very glad" to have been part of the day.

Princess Diana died as a result of injuries sustained in a auto crash in a road tunnel in Paris on August 31 1997 in which Dodi Fayed and Henri Paul, the driver of the Mercedes also died.

"I wanted her to be proud of the person I was to become, I didn't want her to be anxious, or her legacy to be that William or Harry were completely and utterly devastated by it, and all the hard work and love and energy she put into us when we were younger would go to waste".
