Rahul, Manmohan among top opposition leaders attending Sharad Yadav's Virasat Bachao meeting

While Yadav refused to speak on any issue other than the conference, sources said he would talk about his future plans soon, as the official faction in the party has taken disciplinary actions against those siding with him.

"We had made a decision to launch this programme three months ago.This programme is in the interest of the country and not against the government", Yadav told reporters.

Deflecting questions on whether this event was connected to his falling out with Nitish Kumar after the Bihar Chief Minister joined hands with the BJP, Mr. Yadav said, "The ' sajha virasat bachao sammelan ' (save composite culture programme) is not against anybody but in the interests of the 125 crore people of this country".

"People were anxious that I would commit a mistake, " he said.

Yadav said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi from the Congress would attend.

The former JD (U) chief said the decision to hold the event was taken weeks ago, when his party was still with the loose opposition group.

He also said that the JD-U doesn't want Sharad Yadav to sit in the company of "corrupt leaders".

Yadav was accompanied by Ali Anwar Ansari, a Rajya Sabha member suspended from the parliamentary party by the JD (U), and Arun Shrivastava, recently sacked from the post of general secretary.

"We would request Sharadji not to attend Lalu's Desh Bachao rally in Patna on August 27", JD-U spokesperson K.C. Tyagi told reporters here.

He said, "The people who are organizing the meeting are not important for us and we remain unaffected by it".
