School-girl raped on Independence Day in India


"The minor girl delivered a baby through C-section this morning".

She was raped repeatedly over a seven-month period by her uncle who has been arrested.

The girl is not aware that she has given birth.

A local court in Chandigarh turned down the abortion plea on the grounds that she was too far into her pregnancy after a doctors' panel said that termination of the pregnancy would be "too risky".

As the baby has been born prematurely at 35 weeks, she has been placed in the neo-natal intensive care unit of the hospital where she will remain for the next few days, the BBC's Geeta Pandey reports from Delhi.

Dr Dasari Harish, who has been overseeing her care, said that she did not know she had delivered a child and that she had been admitted to hospital to have a stone in her stomach removed.

The order came on a PIL by advocate Alok Srivastava, who moved the top court after a plea for the medical termination of pregnancy was refused by a district court in Chandigarh on July 18. The case was then referred to the Supreme Court, however it also agreed with the lower court.

A child under 16 is raped every 155 minutes in India, according to Unicef statistics.

In May, the high court allowed a 10-year-old from the northern state of Haryana who had been raped to abort her fetus at almost 21 weeks into the pregnancy. "We decline to terminate the pregnancy", the court said.

Indian law forbids abortions after 20 weeks, although courts have previously made exceptions when the foetus could not survive or is at risk of endangering the mother's life.
