United States says THAAD intercept test successful

The Air Force launched a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific that was "detected, tracked and intercepted" by the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system located at a complex in Kodiak, Alaska, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said in a statement.

The decision by South Korea and the U.S.to deploy THAAD was made past year amid the regime's continuous testing and enhancing of its nuclear and missile capabilities.

Earlier this month, the USA conducted a successful test of the THAAD system against an intermediate-range ballistic missile from the same site in Alaska.

This was the 15th successful intercept in 15 tests for the THAAD weapon system.

The test, designated Flight Experiment THAAD (FET)-01, was conducted to gather threat data from a THAAD interceptor in flight, the release said. The last time the US tested THAAD, earlier this month, it said it successfully intercepted an intermediate-range missile target.

"Well, all options are on the table".

The test, conducted over the Pacific Ocean, comes amid heightened tensions with North Korea, which on Saturday said it had conducted its own successful test of a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that proved it has the capacity to strike American's mainland.

"Pence, who is visiting Europe, said Sunday that Washington will continue to marshal the support of the global community to put pressure on Pyongyang until the North will permanently abandon its nuclear and missile program".

THAAD is a ground-based missile defense system created to shoot down short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. THAAD is strictly a defensive weapon system. Moscow and Beijing, in a joint statement, earlier this month called on Washington to immediately halt deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

"As for the deployment of six (THAAD) launchers, South Korea and the USA will make a decision after consultations".

In a statement, the Army said the exercise involved Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and South Korea's Hyunmoo Missile II.

Following Pyongyang's test-firing of an ICBM last Friday, President Moon ordered the military to resume the deployment of THAAD, reversing his previous decision to suspend the deployment until an environmental assessment is carried out.
