Controversy is swirling around a monument of Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, and a neo-confederate group from Dandridge, Tennessee, has scheduled a rally this weekend in protest of its possible removal.
"As assemblies have dispersed into small groups throughout the city, Richmond Police and its regional law enforcement partners continue to monitor these activities and respond appropriately", police officials said in a 5 p.m. news release. But they were surrounded by hundreds of others who said they wanted the statue taken down.
Richmond Police said they trusted Saturday's rally and dissent stayed quiet, yet noticed the occasion came one month after a comparable rally in Charlottesville turned brutal.
"I hope nobody loses their lives tomorrow, on either side, I really do". Authorities closed down streets and blocked them off with dump trucks to prevent a repeat of Charlottesville, when a suspect rammed a vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Do we need another Charlottesville for people to understand the savagery the symbolism of the Confederacy engenders? After the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer in the Charlottesville event, Gov. Terry McAuliffe issued a moratorium on permit rallies around the controversial public monuments.
"I might want everybody to know we are collaborating with police... they are here for everybody's wellbeing", Brandau said. "Have you no sensibility?"
Police said they plan to enforce a policy of no weapons or masks in the area directly surrounding the monument; however Virginia is an open carry state and those wanting to carry guns up to that point will be allowed to. Anyone who rallies within the grass space of the monument will be arrested by police.
Heated arguments between counter protesters and rally organizers characterized the day's events.
