FPL asks for patience, aims for full restoration by Sunday

About 1.5 million homes and businesses in Florida and Georgia remained without power on Friday after Hurricane Irma, including 46 of Florida's almost 700 nursing homes caught in the deadly storm's path.

About 176,000 customers of electric utility cooperatives around the state were still without power Wednesday, according to Georgia EMC, a trade group.

More than 700,000 Georgians remained without power Tuesday night because of Hurricane Irma, which weakened to a tropical storm by the time it reached the Peach State.

Older people can be more susceptible to heat because their bodies do not adjust to temperatures as well as younger people. Fort Myers sits north of where Hurricane Irma made landfall over the weekend, though the area did suffer some damage.

Governor Rick Scott, a Republican, warned the many residents still stuck in the dark that "it's going to take us a long time to get the power back up".

The state says it is working to restore power to assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the impacted areas. This reflects the likelihood that some buildings were too damaged to have power turned back on safely.

There were 477 Tri-County EMC members waiting to have their power restored on Saturday morning, including 265 in Jones, 112 in Baldwin, 83 in Putnam County, 16 in Twiggs and one in Wilkinson.
