Hurricane Jose may threaten Northeast next week

Jose was not expected to make landfall, but could cause swells, leading to life-threatening surf and rip conditions along the southeastern USA coast, as well as Bermuda, the Bahamas, northern Puerto Rico and Hispanola.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Friday are near 70 miles per hour and it is forecast to become a hurricane again later in the day.

The hurricane center shows tropical storm-force winds affecting the central and northern North Carolina coast by Sunday morning.

As of an 11 a.m. advisory, Hurricane Jose had sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and was moving northwest at 9 miles per hour. The storm is expected to turn "north-northwestward tomorrow and northward by Sunday", the forecasters predict.

Even if Jose stays offshore, beaches here in ME will likely be impacted next week in the form of ocean swells and strong rip currents.

Jose is forecast to become a hurricane later today.

Calling it an "odd forecast track", the National Hurricane Center said that Jose should make a small clockwise loop over the open waters of the Atlantic for the next three days.
