If Hurricane Matthew's damage to North Carolina's coast a little over a year ago isn't enough of a wake-up call, Harvey and Irma, back to back, certainly should be.

A calmer commenter wrote, "Don't forget the hurricanes of the past".

We had seen a record gap in major hurricanes hitting the USA after one of the worst years on record.

Climate change deniers are the modern-day equivalent of those who said, "I don't care what the facts are, the world is flat", or, "Earth is the center of the universe".

On the heels of Harvey came another strong storm - Irma, which is now moving toward Florida and at the time of this writing is a strong category 5 storm with sustained winds of more than 185 miles per hour.

Other students have expressed their concern about their loved ones affected by Hurricane Irma.

The prisoner whose detention was announced Thursday is the first known to have been captured under the Trump administration. While a few others have defected or been captured, Hughes said this new fighter could provide valuable intelligence.

A major hurricane is one ranked as a Category 3 or higher, meaning it has a maximum wind speed of at least 111 miles per hour.

Due to thinning ice cover record numbers of ships, including tourist vessels, have been sailing through the Northwest Passage, the formerly closed sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through the Canadian Arctic. More importantly, the average number of hurricanes per decade reaching landfall in the USA has fallen over the past 160 years.

The government's own National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says neither its models "nor our analyses of trends in Atlantic hurricane and tropical storm counts over the past 120-plus years support the notion that greenhouse gas-induced warming leads to large increases in either tropical storm or overall hurricane numbers".

Of those four 1998 hurricanes - Ivan, Jeanne, Karl and Lisa - only Jeanne brushed land, in the Cape Verde Islands, while the others remained over water. "Keeping in mind this year it's I-J K, 2010 is the same. From the beginning, the number of storms is quite similar".

The first half of the 2017 season saw six named storms, half of what is normally seen during years when most named storms occur in the peak part of the season. Since 2006, there has been only one year in which there were no major hurricanes, and that was 2013, a relatively mild year that only had 13 named storms. He pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord earlier this year and has repeatedly said that environmental regulations are against the interests of the working people. "People act like hurricanes like these have never happened".

An El Nino that was expected to combat strengthening tropical systems had not developed as of early August, according to the NOAA. Scientists see warming temperatures across the West as a contributing factor. For example, "wind shear", the variations in wind speed and direction with height, can also cause storms under certain circumstances to weaken or to intensify.

The biggest challenge in the dialogue, he believes, would be to make United States realise Pakistan's security concerns. Some of those meetings are being planned. "We are here to give our point of view logically and with evidence".

While climate change is a polarizing topic, there is greater agreement on clean energy, according to Charles Hernick, policy and advocacy director at the conservative-leaning advocacy group Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions.

The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so it is far from over. The circumstances cry out for more study and attention, not less.

Randy Cerveny, a climatologist and an Arizona State University President's Professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, says that although these storms are huge and impressive, they are not rewriting the record books. "There's a cyclical nature to a lot of these hurricanes".

"We don't do this for poll numbers - we do this because the future of the planet is at stake", Deutch said in a brief interview on Wednesday, addressing the polling decrease among registered Democrats. "We have done well in the past".
