No further extension in filing returns under GST: Government


Speaking at the meeting of Group of Ministers (GoM) on GSTN at Bengaluru on Saturday Mr. Rajender also raised the issues including the editing facility of GSTR-3B, developing MIS reports, rectification of offline utility issues, enabling withdrawal of composition option, enabling amendment of core fields, strengthening the helpline and deputing engineers to States.

The Group of Ministers (GoM) set up to look into the technical issues faced by Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) headed by Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi is hopeful of resolving 80 % of the problems in filing tax returns by October 30. "Only five days left for August filing and only 3.05 lakh have filed form 3B compared to more than 45 lakh in there will be a rush". "So, there are a few glitches initially", said Modi, who attended nearly all tax related meetings during 2007-13.

"We have already extended the period for GSTR-3B".

Adhia said the government had earlier made a decision to extend the time limit to have a proper learning period due to GSTN portal hiccups.

The minister also said that those who can afford vehicle shouldn't be complaining about this price hike and must bear it for the sake of the country.

To a query, Adhia said the meeting was very fruitful because it led to a better understanding among all stakeholders. "22 crore invoices have been filed in two and a half months and 85 lakhs new and old dealers have been registered under GST", he added. For at least six months the taxpayers have to file their own assessment. GSTN is the biggest network in the world.

"We have kept long deadlines for GST filing".

Assuring the taxpayers that the government would be able to iron out 70-80 per cent of the technical issues being faced in filing returns by October 30, Modi said the people should not wait for the last day.

"There are always initial hicupps and issues, but there haven't been large-scale failures", he said.

She said that on "big issues" like that, the federal government is able to "contain" Trump, but that it may not be enough to stop future reckless activity.

Besides Modi, other GoM members are Chattisgarh Minister for Commercial Taxes Amar Agarwal, Karnataka Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda, Kerala Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Issac and and Telengana Finance Minister Etela Rajendar.

Besides, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, GSTN Chairman Ajay Bhushan Pandey and GSTN CEO Prakash Kumar also attended the meeting held in Bengaluru.

The GoM meeting will be held every 15 days, mostly in Bengaluru, with the next meeting scheduled in the first week of October.

Under the one tax system, taxes of 36 departments have to be paid in one system.
