TMC heavyweight Mukul Roy quits party

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and one time Mamata Banerjee confidante, Mukul Roy, has stepped down from the working committee of the Trinamool Congress. Roy will also be stepping down as Rajya Sabha MP after the Pujas. According to PTI, Roy has said he will resign as Rajya Sabha MP and from party's primary membership after Durga Puja.

Last week, Trinamool leaders had reprimanded Roy for allegedly hobnobbing with BJP leaders. "I will formally resign after the Durga Puja vacation".

"With a heavy heart, I announce my resignation", Roy said in a press conference.

For quite sometime rumours were doing rounds that he has been in close touch with the BJP's top leadership and is likely to join the party.

He, however, refused to divulge more details about his decision or the reason behind it. He wa absent from the event and was also unavailable for the comments as he was busy in the Durga Puja magazine unveiling with the name of Jago Bangla on September 19. On Monday, Roy didn't explain as to why he quit Mamata's party.

"I came to know that Mr. Roy is in touch with our central leaders". "Today, I will not say a word". I will say it after Durga Puja.

Roy was recently removed as the TMC vice president after the party chose to restructure its committee. He was also instrumental in party strategy during the polls, especially in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. "We will consider it if he wishes to join BJP", Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh had earlier said.
