USA officials expressed hope that the hostages' freedom could represent a turning point in relations between Pakistan and the United States, uneasy allies in fighting Taliban and other Islamist extremists in the region. The Pakistani Army announced it had freed the couple along with their three children - all of whom were born in captivity.

The parents of Canadian national Joshua Boyle lauded Pak Army soldiers for their rescue operation that led to the recovery of their son, held hostage by Taliban in 2012.

Through the years, videos and letters trickled out from their captors: Coleman and Boyle begging for freedom and for "money, power and friends" for the Haqqani network holding them prisoner.

A senior Pakistani security source on Friday detailed how the family, who were expected to leave Pakistan on Friday, were freed following a auto chase in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Boyle was once married to Zaynab Khadr, the older sister of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr and the daughter of a late senior al-Qaida financier, according to The Associated Press.
