Congress sweeps Nanded civic polls, opposition routed

The Shiv Sena stood a distant second with 14 while the BJP won only 2 seats.

As per the State Election Commission's directives, Ward No 02 of the Nanded Waghala City Municipal Corporation (NWCMC) was selected by draw for Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. Its candidate Jagruti Patil won the seat after beating Shiv Sena nominee Minakshi Patil by 4,792 votes. However, after Pramila's death, her two sons joined the BJP and Pramila's daughter-in-law Jagruti got the party nomination to contest the by-poll.

Another prominent contender, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which was earlier leading in one seat, was overtaken by the Congress in this famed Sikh pilgrimage centre.

The area is state party chief Ashok Chavan's stronghold, and over 60% turnout was observed on Wednesday. Of the 81 seats, 41 are reserved for women, 15 for Scheduled Caste candidates, two for Scheduled Tribe candidates and 22 seats for Backward Class communities.

The State Election Commission of Maharashtra had placed order for 400 VVPAT machines from the Electronic Corporation of India (ECI), but the company could not provide so many machines in time, so it was chose to use available 70 machines on pilot basis at a single ward in Nanded polls. Polling for the Bhandup ward no 116 by-election was held on Wednesday. 19 wards are represented by 04 members each, while 01 ward has 05 representatives.

The 81-member civic body is now controlled by the Congress.

Nanded is the home turf of Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who is an MP from the constituency.

NCP, which had won 10 seats in the last elections, has so far not opened its account.
