The US President was originally invited to the United Kingdom by Theresa May seven days after his inauguration in January - sparking a backlash from his critics in Britain.

President Trump accepted the invitation for a state visit in January when Theresa May visited the White House.

It will likely be one stop on a tour of several countries, the Evening Standard reported on Wednesday, and will focus on global security discussions.

Foreign Office sources confirmed there were no current plans for a state visit but said a working visit "could happen".

Theresa May's offer of a state visit as a guest of the Queen was immediately criticised as a breach of convention.

It is also possible that he could formally open the new U.S. embassy at Nine Elms, near Battersea Power Station, the newspaper reported.

The first real clue that the planned State Visit would not be going ahead in 2017 came in the Queen's Speech in June.

Over the summer The Guardian reported that Mr Trump told Mrs May in a phone call he wanted to put the trip on hold until the British public supported it.

"Exact dates for President Trump to visit have not yet been arranged".

Earlier this year, the British public banded together to sign a petition that stated: Mr Trump "should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen".

But the invitation prompted a huge backlash as leading politicians said Mr Trump should not be granted the honour because of his controversial policies on immigration and terrorism.
