HC slams CBI for 'complete lack of interest' in tracing Najeeb Ahmed

The Delhi High Court was slated to hear a habeas corpus petition filed by Fatima Nafees, Najeeb's mother, on Monday, and they had asked people to assemble outside the court to "demand a speedy and impartial enquiry by an independent team monitored by the court".

Fatima Nafees, the mother of missing JNU scholar Najeeb Ahmed, was detained by Delhi Police outside the Delhi high court where she was protesting against CBI's "ineffective investigation". "We direct the concerned DIG to ensure that the status report is filed under his signature or at least he should read them", the court observed.

A bench of Justices G S Sistani and Chander Shekhar said during arguments, it was "very unhappy" with CBI after contradictions appeared in what was orally submitted in the court and what it has indicated in its status report.

The DCP said that Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Geeta Kumar informed about the intended protest demonstration outside the court following which adequate police personnel were deployed there. She was further advised to hold the same at Ramlila Maidan, Delhi, said the DCP. "No result even on paper".

The high court bench also gave directions to the CMM not to give long dates in pleas for polygraph tests, especially in such a matter where there was urgency, saying it would defeat the objective.

According to the Newspaper, The probe was later handed to the Crime Branch.

"Delhi police misbehaved with students, and Najeeb's mother who is old and physically unwell by using words like you are not the only case we had. No reason has been given why the court has given such a long date, as the objective of polygraph test will get defeated by giving such as long date", the court remarked.

The court had handed over the probe to the CBI five months ago.

The high court had immediately directed the Delhi Police to "explore all angles" and "cut across political barriers" to trace the young man, saying no one could just vanish from the heart of the national capital.
