Hurricane Nate makes landfall in Louisiana as category one storm


Louisiana is bracing for Hurricane Nate as the Category 1 wind makes its way through the Gulf of Mexico.

The Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings for southeastern Louisiana and coastal MS and Alabama, including New Orleans, Biloxi and Mobile.

Nate has weakened to a tropical storm as it moves inland over MS and Alabama.

In the U.S., a state of emergency was declared for 29 Florida counties and states near Nate's path - Alabama, Louisiana and MS - as well as the city of New Orleans, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Nate was expected to pass to the east of New Orleans, sparing the city its most ferocious winds and storm surge. Still prepare for heavy widespread rainfall, sustained winds up to 40 miles per hour and wind gusts up to 50-55 miles per hour. The timing of landfall is estimated to be overnight from Saturday into Monday.

Etheridge said there could be storm surges of 11 to 12 feet in coastal parts of the county, which is on the coast next to the Alabama border.
