Mazda Teases Two Concepts Ahead of Tokyo Motor Show

Mazda says one of the concepts will herald its next-generation products, while the other will signal the direction of the company's future design language. The back of the hatch appears rounder than the current generation Mazda3.

With a new generation SKYACTIV-X engine, which is set to become the world's first mass-produced compression-ignition motor, under the hood, Mazda is also hoping to offer better dynamic performance along with seductive styling. It's no surprise that this technology is coming to the Mazda3, as we recently spotted a Mazda3 prototype wearing Skyactiv-X graphics. That, of course, can mean anything.

There are more clues to the concept's state of near-production readiness status than its name alone: Product Concept #1 looks to be finished in Mazda's signature Soul Red paint, for example, while its profile bears a striking - albeit streamlined - resemblance to the current Mazda3. "You can think of it as an evolution of theme of the RX Vision". It seems as though this will be the rotary-powered concept Mazda revealed it will bring to Tokyo, but we can't be sure.

The first one, christened as the Next-Generation Design Vision and seen above, looks to be a sleek, four-door affair made for the sole objective of showing off the brand's overall design future.

The Mazda stand at the show will also be presenting the CX-8, the firm's latest crossover, which will launch on the Japanese market before the end of this year, and the limited-edition Mazda MX-5 Red Top series, which is distinguished by a cherry red roof and auburn Nappa leather upholstery.

The Skyactiv-X technology is part of the company's Zoom-Zoom 2030 vision to help five down global emissions.
