Minnesota Man Who Helped Kidnapped Teen Gives Her His $7K Reward


The 15-year-old girl was abducted from her home on August 8 in Alexandria, Minn., and taken to an abandoned house where she was physically and sexually assaulted. She then ran towards Melchert's auto across his field.

'I opened the door and told him (Earl Melchert), to call 911.

Block got into Melchert's vehicle and shared her excruciating story with him.

Wyffels called Melchert a "hero" at a meeting with Melchert and Block's family on Friday.

Earl agrees that Jasmine was the real hero in the situation, which is why he made a decision to forgo his reward money and give it to Jasmine instead. "His instinct said someone needed help".

Melchert gave it to Block. Instead he told Wyffels he wanted to give that reward to the teenage girl and her family.

So when Melchert, 65, spotted movement hundreds of yards away in the grasslands one day last month, he thought it might be just that - a deer.

"The reward money means absolutely nothing to me", he told Block's mother, Sarah Block. "You guys deserve it". "What no one expected was the kindness and generosity that came straight from Earl's heart today", the message read. "Thank you Earl, it is people like you that make the world a better place".

Block's family had contributed $2,000, while an anonymous donor had given $5,000 as a part of the reward sum. "Things are looking up".

"I did what I had to do", he said. "If we all treat each other like what happened in this room, I think we're going to have a better place".

'They went to the store to get some food, ' she said. Block, who knew of Barker as a neighborhood acquaintance, agreed to help him and got into his vehicle.

Soon after, officials also arrested Thomas Barker, 32, and Joshua Holby, 31, both from Carlos, Minnesota.

After Melchert presented the family with the check, the girl's relatives invited Melchert and his wife, out for lunch, his wife, Jody Melchert said in an interview Sunday with The Washington Post. He mentioned that it was a lot of money but that the family needed it way more than he did.
