Russia, Saudi Arabia cement new friendship with king's visit

"We reached an agreement with Saudi Arabia for the supply of S-400 air defense systems, Kornet-EM anti-tank missiles, TOS-1A systems, automatic AGS-30 grenade launchers and Kalashnikov AK-103 assault rifles", she told Sputnik.

Russia's Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation has officially confirmed the conclusion of the deal with Saudi Arabia on the supply of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems and other weapons.

The king has been visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in talks over oil and Syria, Saudi's al Arabiya television reported.

The THAAD - which has already been supplied to Saudi Arabia's neighbors Qatar and the United Arab Emirates - is one of the most capable defensive missile batteries in the U.S. arsenal and comes equipped with an advanced radar system.

The U.S. government has approved the sale to Saudi Arabia of the advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system for $15 billion, the State Department said on October 6.

The Kremlin says an agreement to sell Russian missiles to Saudi Arabia does not pose a threat to any other country.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a friendly country", the statement read.

During the visit of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to Russian Federation last week, deals worth at least 2.1 billion US dollars were signed, according to a Kremlin statement. "This visit is the beginning of strategic cooperation", al Harithi said.

The US has already deployed THAAD to South Korea in defence of North Korea's short-range missiles, which has angered China for interfering.

Both Washington and Saudi Arabia accuse Tehran of aggressive and disruptive behavior in the region.
