Russian military jet crashes on takeoff in Syria, crew killed: agencies

A Russian military jet crashed on Tuesday while taking off Syria's Hmeimim base, Russian news agencies said.

According to the first reports, the aircraft skidded off runway during take-off; based on other reports, the aircraft caught fire shortly after take-off and crashed 1 km east of the village of Shrachir. The crew has been killed.

The two-person crew failed to eject.

The Sukhoi-24 attack aircraft, codenamed Fencer by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance, was heading out on a combat mission, but its crew failed to eject after the plane veered off the runway, the ministry was cited as saying.

A technical malfunction could have been the root cause of the accident, that did no cause damage on the ground, the Russian MoD said.
