A dominantly black public school in MS named after Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States in the 1860s, will be renamed after former President Barrack Obama, according to a report released Wednesday.

"Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep ensalved being named after him", Ms. Jefferson said. Parents, students and school staff were given two weeks to submit recommendations, and they voted using paper ballots on October 5.

School buildings must be named "for persons of good character and prominence who have made outstanding contributions to the school system", according to the school board's facility-naming policy.

The students chose Obama because they were alive during his administration and felt that he shared their principles, Jefferson said.

On Aug. 16, a study conducted by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that over 100 public schools bore the names of Confederate figures in 2016.

The PTA and school district need to work out how and when to change signs, websites, and fundraise to put all the changes in place.

The name change will go into effect for the 2018-19 school year.
