South Africa's T20 Global League postponed till next year

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed the T20 Global League has been postponed until 2018.

CSA's decision leaves a six-week gap in the peak summer season with no cricket in South Africa, as a separate window was created for the T20GL 2017.

Mitchell McClenaghan and Brendon McCullum have been left in the lurch following the postponement of South Africa's new Twenty20 competition.

Haroon Lorgat, the chief negotiator of the league, resigned as Cricket South Africa's chief executive last month and was replaced by Thabang Moroe as acting chief executive.

"Having discussed it with Mr. Moroe and (CSA president) Mr. (Chris) Nenzani‚ we have arrived at a unanimous decision to defer the inaugural edition to next year‚" the release quoted a minority owner of the Pretoria Mavericks‚ Osman Osman‚ as saying. Having discussed it with all our stakeholders, including the franchise owners, we believe that the interest of the league should be our first priority. Pietersen, Morgan and Jason Roy had signed separate contracts outside the draft as overseas worldwide icon players for fees believed to be around £200,000 that included the use of image rights to promote the tournament, which was due to begin on Dec 3.

CSA could also find themselves fighting on another front‚ what with the players' union up in arms at the postponement.

Moroe later said at a press conference that it would have been reckless for CSA to go ahead. "To deliver this league I would need to dip into CSA coffers and that I can t do".

The announcement came after a meeting between CSA and the GLT20 board, and in consultation with the franchise owners. "At this time, we also wish to thank all the players, sponsors, broadcast partners, SACA (South African Cricketers Association) and FICA (Federation of International Cricketers) who have committed to the project", added Moroe.
