Tim Cook states technology not yet advanced enough for AR glasses

Cook did, however, feel the problems would eventually be solved, saying "most technology challenges can be solved, but it's a matter of how long".

Amid reports that Apple has been busy developing a pair of advanced smart glasses, Tim Cook went on record during a recent interview with The Independent and essentially put to bed any hopes that such a product might see the light of day anytime soon.

The idea of augmented reality smart glasses has been around for a few years. Although it now has an AR platform to build on, Cook's comments show Apple's still taking the same steady approach to evolving augmented reality hardware.

Oculus Go is Facebook's new standalone headset for $200
The Santa Cruz prototype was showcased at last years event, demonstrating Oculus' plans for a wireless high-end headset. Facebook VP of VR Hugo Barra even declares it "hands-down the easiest way for developers" to get in with VR.

Microsoft should embrace incrementalism and release regular updates to their offering, which will make them all the more nimble when the actual revolutionary improvements do arrive and would reduce the delta between their solution and Apple's eventual "groundbreaking" product. "I can tell you that the technology itself doesn't exist to do [AR glasses] in a quality way", Cook said to Vogue after dismissing "rumours and gossip" about the idea. Unfortunately he declared that the technology needed to create augmented reality glasses "in a quality way" doesn't actually exist. Apple hasn't been the first company to do very much for several years. The display technology required, as well as putting enough stuff around your face - there's huge challenges with that. "I think it's going to be hard for other folks". Their field of view and the quality of their displays, he said, aren't there yet.

Google tried it with the Glass, but we never saw a commercial rollout of the same.

We do know that Apple has experimented with a number of prototypes but based on this information from Cook, Apple's Smart Glasses are still a ways off.

One area associated with AR that isn't ready for prime time is smart glasses.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Independent, Cook compared the arrival of ARKit to when the App Store first arrived in 2008. Then there are lot of games that can be played on a tabletop. "And then you have all the developers that are able to put their energy into their passion", said Cook.
