Woman shot dead by officer after slamming auto into cop

Paramedics transported the officer to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Cops in Florida killed a woman after an apparent hit-and-run crash where she knocked a police officer to the ground while trying to escape.

Officers said the driver kept going and crashed into a white SUV on 12th Street and Collins Avenue. The officer who was struck suffered lacerations to the body and loss of consciousness, according to Miami Beach Fire. Police said another officer fired at the woman, who was struck by at least one round.

Two Miami Beach police officers ran to the initial crsah site after the driver blew a red light and careened into another vehicle around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, police said.

In 2014, Miami Beach police changed its policy, prohibiting officers from shooting into moving vehicles unless "a person in the vehicle is immediately threatening the officer or another person with deadly force by means other than the vehicle". Oates said they were investigating.

"One of the cops was in front of the vehicle and when they were yelling at her to get out of the auto, she just started the vehicle again", said witness Miguel Garcia.

Miguel Garcia, a tourist from Chile, said he was coming back from the beach when he saw the crash happen. "I heard like shots, like four or five shots, like 'pow, pow, pow, pow!' And then the auto lost control", Garcia added. Garcia said he and several others followed the female driver on foot as she drove away.

Several people surrounded the driver, telling her to get out of the auto.

Roads remained closed along Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue from 11th to 13th streets late Sunday.
