David Poisson: French alpine skier dies after training crash in Canada

"According to information now available to the French ski federation, David Poisson fell heavily after losing a ski during a shared training session with other countries, which took place yesterday (Monday) in Nakiska, Canada", the federation said.

"Shortly before the finish, traveling at around 100 km/h, Poisson slipped and went through two safety nets before shooting out into the woods", an eyewitness told Swiss tabloid Blick.

David Fish, a 35-year-old, bronze medallist in downhill at the world Championships of alpine skiing 2013, died Monday after a fall in training in the canadian station of Nakiska, announced the French ski Federation (FFS). An emergency team tried to revive Poisson for an hour and a half after the accident.

On December 29, 2015 David Poisson celebrated his third place after competing in a World Cup downhill race in Santa Caterina Valfurva, Italy.

Poisson was reportedly well-liked among skiers, and affectionately nicknamed "Caillou" (small stone or pebble) due to his small stature.

They've been building the course since October and there will be multiple layers of netting on the course.

The FFS said it was in contact with Poisson's family and supporting them through the tragedy.
