Israel Horovitz Resigns from Gloucester Stage Following Sexual Assault Allegations

One woman, Maddie Corman, said she was a 16 year-old actress working in an Off Broadway play as her mother lay dying in a hospital following a stroke in 1986 when Horovitz, then 47, attempted to console her, only to press her against a wall and "forcefully" kiss her just as she was about to go onstage.

Gloucester Stage severed ties with Horovitz last week in light of the allegations. In a piece for The New York Times, nine women allege that Horovitz repeatedly sexually assaulted and harassed them, including forcibly kissing and groping them, and, in the case one woman, raped her. The women, he said, were "tightly wound, if you know what I mean", adding that such accusations were tossed around "like manhole covers".

Israel Horovitz, the founding artistic director and most notable literary light at the tiny Gloucester Stage Company, has cut ties with the theater amid renewed accusations of sexual misconduct that allegedly spanned decades and occurred as recently as previous year. "I apologize to the courageous women who came forward in 1992 and 1993 but were not listened to", Elizabeth Neumeier, the Gloucester board's current president, said in a statement.

The writer's son, Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys, said in his own statement: "I believe the allegations against my father are true, and I stand behind the women that made them".

Israel Horovitz, meanwhile, has responded with a statement, saying that he has "a different memory of some of these events".

Horovitz is the latest prominent figure in the entertainment industry to be accused of sexual misconduct since allegations of harassment were first published against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

As of last week, Gloucester Stage is no longer working with Horovitz, now 78, in light of the accusations from one of the Times' sources, Maia Ermansons, who accused him of forcefully groping and kissing her a year ago when she met with him to discuss a theater project. The Gloucester Stage board's president, Barry Weiner, dismissed the accusations at the time. In a revealing coda that can be heard in the testimony of a number of women who have come forward with assertions of abuse, the teacher/mentor relationship sometimes continued despite the assault, and sometimes included sexual encounters.

After arriving, Meinhardt, who was 19 at the time, said Horovitz locked the door and proceeded to grope and kiss her, leading her to cry.
