It is visible that from some time now, the president of United States, Donald Trump has been using the term "Indo-Pacific" instead of Asia-Pacific, which is his signal that India is more important to the U.S. when it comes to choosing between India and China.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held discussions on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit.

The dialogue is aimed at bolstering their influence over the region against China's expanding presence.

American officials earlier said the new term "Indo- Pacific" replacing Asia Pacific captures the importance of the rise of India with which the U.S. has strong and growing ties.

Indicating the simmering regional tension with China and Beijing's assertiveness over the South China Sea issue, a statement from the Australian Foreign Ministry informed that freedom of navigation figured at the 'Quad.' It said, "upholding the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific and respect for worldwide law, freedom of navigation and overflight; increase (d) connectivity; challenges of countering terrorism and upholding maritime security in the Indo-Pacific" were also discussed.

New Delhi, Nov 12 (UNI) Officials from India's Ministry of External Affairs, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and United State's Department of State met in Manila on Sunday for consultations on issues of common interest in the Indo-Pacific region, the Ministry of External Affairs said here on Sunday.

"The officials also exchanged views on addressing common challenges of terrorism and proliferation linkages impacting the region as well as on enhancing connectivity", the MEA statement said.

Asked whether he meant "exclusion of the relevant parties" referred to omission of China, Geng said China welcomes the development of friendly cooperation between relevant countries.

The move is seen as counter to China's aggressive behaviour in the area. And the strategy is "certainly not" to contain China, he said.
