The discovery of the letter comes at a opportune time - Sessions will be testifying before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday about new revelations in special counsel Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian collusion and election interference.

In a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, Virginia Republican, Mr. Sessions said he wouldn't confirm or deny whether there was an investigation but that he has asked senior prosecutors to evaluate "certain issues" raised by Mr. Goodlatte. Among issues Goodlatte wants investigate are how the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the probe into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state, several issues involving the Clinton Foundation and multiple matters involving a Russia's nuclear energy agency's purchase of the Canadian mining firm Uranium One.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday that he's looking into appointing a special counsel to look at whether the FBI properly handled the investigation into Russia's purchase of uranium rights and donations to the Clinton Foundation while Hillary Clinton led the State Department.

Mueller is now heading up a special counsel investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"Hopefully they are doing something and at some point, maybe we are going to all have it out", Trump said.

Trump has been pushing hard to divert attention from his own investigation that looks increasingly ominous for the president and those around him.

The appearance before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday follows a guilty plea from one Trump campaign aide who served on a foreign policy council that Sessions chaired, as well as statements from another adviser who said he'd advised the then-GOP Alabama senator about an upcoming trip to Russian Federation.

"I have never accused the attorney general of colluding with Russian Federation and i am not doing that now".

The Department of Justice did not return a request for comment Monday. Brian Fallon, who served as the press secretary for the Clinton campaign, noted that the Justice Department letter became public not long after it was revealed Donald Trump Jr. had communicated with WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign.

Trump, in particular, has highlighted allegations of Democratic wrongdoing to distract from Mueller's probe.

In the Justice Department's response, Boyd did not indicate which of the topics might draw greater interest than others, though he said the review by senior federal prosecutors would "better enable the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General to more effectively evaluate and manage the caseload".

Trump in recent weeks has repeatedly weighed in on department affairs, publicly lamenting that he does not have more direct involvement in its operations and calling on law enforcement scrutiny of Democrat Hillary Clinton, his opponent in the 2016 presidential race, and other Democrats.
