These badges are created to flag all safety, health and discrimination issued, that include sexual assault, rape and theft, a spokesperson for TripAdvisor said in a prepared statement released to the media.
They added: "We've made the decision to badge several hotels in Mexico, most recently reported on within the press for having issues with tainted alcohol and sexual assault". "We do believe the first version of this badge is created to be a catalyst for consumers to do additional research outside of TripAdvisor if our reviews may not readily communicate issues related to health, safety and/or discrimination issues, and spur a traveler to do a keyword search in TripAdvisor reviews".
TripAdvisor will look at media reports as well as "other credible sources of information" when determining whether or not a business should receive a notification on its listing.
"However, if the issues persist, we may extend the duration of the badge", TripAdvisor spokesman Kevin Carter told the New York Times.

The company also has maintained that it doesn't take reviews or forum posts down because they include rape or sexual assault.
