The ruling party will next month hold an extra ordinary congress to reaffirm Mugabe's candidature in next year's presidential elections and also amend the party constitution to allow for a female vice president.

Zimbabwe is reportedly "on the edge" after the country's army chief demanded a "stop" to the purge in President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF following the sacking of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Chiwenga threatened retribution on all Zanu PF counter-revolutionaries bent on "destroying the party from within".

He also denied that such maligning practice was initiated by the BJP against its own leaders in the past. Hardik said that he is "amused" that the BJP is so "petrified" of his existence in the political sphere.

Mr Mnangagwa, once seen as a successor to Mr Mugabe, has fled into exile.

Chiwenga did not state what action the military would take but said the defense forces "strongly urge the party to stop the reckless utterances by politicians from the ruling party denigrating the military which is causing alarm and despondency within the rank and file".

He said the ZANU-PF had been undermined by "gossiping, backbiting and public chastisement" since 2015, and added, "Indeed, the party is undoing its legacy built over the years". Mugabe, 93, fired Munangagwa, the man who for so long looked like he would succeed the longtime Zimbabwe president. "The resultant economic impasse has ushered in more challenges to the Zimbabwean populace such as cash shortages and rising commodity prices".

The unprecedented move by the army since independence comes a week after Mnangagwa issued a statement saying that he would return home in a few week's time to take over all levers of power. I will fight tooth and nail against those making a mockery of Zanu PF founding principles, ethos and values.
