Twitter doubles character limit to 280 for (nearly) everyone


Twitter says it's ending its iconic 140-character limit - and giving almost everyone 280 characters. But the social media platform now opened up the feature to all users following a successful trial run. The company made this change to allow users to express themselves without hitting the character limit.

Perhaps that is true, but here in Texas we don't really know how to act with the new character limit. As Twitter explained in a blog post last month, some languages are more susceptible to cramming than others. By removing that hurdle, Twitter is hoping people will tweet more, drawing more users in.

The expansion to 280-character tweets will be extended to all users except those tweeting in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, who will still have the original limit. "Maybe I could get used to this extra characters thing", she wrote, then said, "I'm awful at fighting the system".

Only 2% of tweets from test users were over 190 characters. Even before it did so, users found creative ways to get around the limit.

"During the first few days of the test many people Tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but soon after behavior normalized", Rosen wrote.
