Updated overdose deaths show 12% decrease in Northern BC

Coquitlam is one of many cities noted for drug overdose deaths in the most recent report but no numbers are reported for Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

It says the latest preliminary data indicates there were 80 suspected overdose deaths in September, up 31 per cent from the same month past year.

The B.C. government says fentanyl continues to play a big role, with 83 per cent of suspected drug deaths involving people with fentanyl in their system, which in most cases was combined with other illicit drugs.

Last year illicit drug overdoses killed 914 people, almost doubling overdose numbers from the year before.

As of September, more than 1,100 British Columbians have died due to suspected illicit drug overdoses, 33 of them from Kamloops.

Most common drugs found mixed with the deadly substance include cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines, occurring primarily among men ages 30 to 59.
