Woman angered by politician's sexist meme beats him in local election

One of the more delicious moments of vindication occurred when New Jersey Democrat Ashley Bennett, spurred by Atlantic County freeholder John Carman's sexist Women's March meme, ran against him and won.

Carman posted a meme on the day of the Women's March that featured a woman in a kitchen and the message, "Will the women's protest be over in time for them to cook dinner?" He apologized a few days later, saying it was an error in judgment.

As the Inquirer reported on Wednesday, Bennett was so angered by Carman's posting that she showed up to protest at an Atlantic County freeholder's meeting. One woman held a box of macaroni and cheese and instructions for Carman to make his own dinner. "I walked out because you had the entire time to sit and collect your thoughts, and hear what people were saying, and instead of apologizing and saying you could do better, you disrespect people and say the people you surround yourself are strong", she said at the time.

Bennett beat Carman by 1,000 votes out of 14,000 cast for the seat, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer.

And there was Bennett, a first-time candidate who works as a psychiatric emergency screener at a local hospital.

Still, Carman's response to the controversy upset Bennett, and she said on MSNBC that she chose to run shortly after the meeting. "For all the people who felt their voice wasn't heard, I said 'I'll run and I will be your voice'".

Carman drew more attention last month for wearing a motorcycle jacket with a patch containing a Confederate flag.

The post drew national attention and was compounded by the fact that Carman did not apologize at the next freeholder meeting despite almost two hours of public comments chided him for his conduct. I am beyond speechless and incredibly grateful to serve my community.

One person who didn't find it amusing was Bennett. "Lighten up", Carman wrote to one offended constituent.
