The 163.41-carat flawless D colour diamond, suspended from an emerald and diamond necklace called The Art of Grisogono, sold for 33.5 million Swiss francs ($33.8 million, 28.7 million euros), after taxes and commissions, at the Christie´s autumn jewel auction. The bidding for it started at £15 million after which it was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder, the Daily Mail reported.

This marks "a new world-record price for a D colour diamond at auction", Rahul Kadakia, auctioneer and head of Christie´s global jewels division, told AFP.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) found the stone was a D-colour, Type IIA diamond - a variety highly valued for its transparency and colour.

David Poisson: French alpine skier dies after training crash in Canada
They've been building the course since October and there will be multiple layers of netting on the course. The FFS said it was in contact with Poisson's family and supporting them through the tragedy.

Australian diamond company Lucapa, which mined the stone originally measuring over 7 centimetres (2.7 inches) in length, says it was the largest diamond ever discovered in the African nation of Angola.

A team of more than 10 specialists from the Julius Klein Group in NY transformed the rough diamond into the final cut and polished gem.

The stone up for sale Tuesday is meanwhile a "much larger diamond, and its title of the largest ideal stone could see it attract a winning bid of over $50 million", he suggested.

The diamond was then used to create 50 different designs, before finalizing on the asymmetric necklace with the diamond as its centerpiece. The dazzling necklace is made of 18 diamonds on one side and a dual row of pear-shaped emeralds on the other. Experts, however, are bitterly disappointed as they had expected the diamond to be sold for at least £12 million more.

A further highlight of the sale was Le Grand Mazarin, a light pink diamond of 19.07 carats, and one of the most famous and important Golconda diamonds in history.

Le Grand Mazarin was up for auction for the first time in 130 years, during a sell-off of French crown jewels.

It has been auctioned off once before: It was among the French Crown Jewels sold off in 1887 - 17 years after France´s Second Empire collapsed and Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie sought exile in England, leaving their jewels behind.
