Aiyar's 'neech' remark reeks of feudal arrogance, says BJP

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar was suspended from primary membership of Congress Party and issued him a showcause notice on Thursday. "BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party", Gandhi said on Twitter.

As Aiyar's remarks that Modi was a "neech aadmi" (low man) in the context of his criticism of the Congress vis-a-vis B.R. Ambedkar snowballed, the Prime Minister referred to it in an election meeting in Surat and attacked the Congress leader, saying he called him a "neech jaati" (low caste). The Congress has a different culture and heritage. "I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyer to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said", Gandhi tweeted this afternoon.

Prime Minister Modi had said the Nehru-Gandhi family did the greatest injustice to Babasaheb Ambedkar and Sardar Patel. We wish them well. Mani Shankar was reacting on a comment made by PM Modi who targeted former PM Jawaharlal Nehru for sidelining the contribution of Dr. BR Ambedkar.

"I am an ordinary worker of Congress, have not even been asked to campaign in Gujarat so why such a uproar over my comment?"

"I meant low level when I said "neech", I think in English when I speak in Hindi as Hindi is not my mother tongue. Have I done any "neech" work?" These are some words or phrases the Congress has used for PM Modi in the past. "They can keep their language, we will do our work", the PM said as reported by NDTV. Is this not an insult to Gujarat?

"I beg to the people of India- please let them be. But in Hindi if low means low-born, then I tender apology", he told reporters after his remarks in the morning triggered a political storm. Modi further reminded the people of what has been said earlier by Congress and its allies. He said, if "neech" has any other connotations, he is sorry for using the term. Aiyar's mindset is a "darbaari" one'.

He had, in January 2014, before the Modi-wave took the nation by surprise, said "Modi would never become prime minister, but he was welcome to serve tea to Congressmen".
