Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez, former San Antonian, announces run for governor

Democrat Lupe Valdez has signed paperwork to run for Texas governor, saying the state's Republican-controlled government shouldn't keep "putting a spin on lies and creating fear".

"I've dedicated my life to defending Texas and I'm not done yet", Valdez said.

"I'm a proud Texas Democrat". Valdez is one of only two female sheriffs in the state, and she is the only openly-gay female sheriff in Texas. Her office oversees the second largest county jail in Texas.

Valdez will resign as sheriff to run for governor. Valdez is easily the most high-profile Democrat to throw her hat in the ring for 2018-Democrats couldn't talk either of the Castros, Dallas representative Rafael Anchia, or actor Eva Longoria into what is likely to be a doomed campaign-and the all but certain victor of her party's primary. A San Antonio native, she is the daughter of migrant farmworkers and Army veteran who publicly acknowledged she was lesbian when she ran for sheriff.

"The definition of an optimist is a black Democrat running in Texas", he quipped. Political consultants and experts rated her chances of success as slim, at best.

Hackers hold county files hostage
Earlier in the day Tuesday, a Mecklenburg County source said the outage was "believed to be due to an external threat". He's also the author of the Judd Ryker global thriller series focused on a State Department crisis manager.

"And that makes fundraising more hard", Jillson said. "She spent weeks trying to get in the race, made a head fake last week, and is now in". She has no statewide campaign experience or organization, no fundraising network, no name ID outside Dallas.

Nonetheless, Democratic Party officials applauded her candidacy as another step to turning Texas blue next year.

Valdez faces an uphill battle in a state that hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office in more than 20 years, against an incumbent, Gov. Greg Abbott, who trounced Wendy Davis with almost 60 percent of the vote in 2014. But Davis lost to Abbott by 20-points.

Valdez announced her intention this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 6) around 6 p.m., and will make the official announcement just before noon at the Dallas County Democratic Party Headquarters.

Until Wednesday, six little-known Democrats had filed to challenge Republican Gov. Her statement drew harsh criticism from Governor Abbott who said, "sanctuary city policies like those promoted by your recent decision to implement your own case-by-case immigrant detention plan will no longer be tolerated in Texas".

Female Democratic senators call on Al Franken to resign
Franken, in his statement, said the idea he would claim such conduct as a right as an entertainer was "preposterous". Al Franken of trying to forcibly kiss her against her will, according to Politico . "Enough is enough.

"I think we're going to raise whatever money's necessary".

Abbott's campaign had no immediate reaction to Valdez's candidacy.

Valdez dismissed the endorsement as not reflecting the view of the association's full membership.

While Valdez becomes the highest-profile Democratic gubernatorial candidate to date, she still faces an uphill battle against Abbott. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a second term in 2018.
