Horses injured and killed in California's fast-moving Creek Fire

The charred remains of 29 horses were left behind by the Creek Fire, one of five that has led to the evacuation of almost 200,000 people in Southern California.

- An early-morning second-alarm brush fire that broke out in the Kagel Canyon area above Sylmar Tuesday charred more than 4,000 acres, damaged at least one home and prompted the evacuation of people and animals.

Evacuation orders first issued Tuesday were affecting about 110,000 households, according to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. She and her family were given just enough time to gather some necessities but not their horses, Padilla said. Los Angeles County fire officials said the blaze, which was estimated to have burned 12,605 acres, was at 10 percent containment Thursday morning.

That zones hugs Foothill Boulevard and stretches for approximately 15 miles from Sylmar to Crescenta Highlands.

The fire also forced a mass evacuation of large animals, primarily horses but also others such as alpacas.

Two evacuation centers were opened: Sylmar Recreation Center at 13109 Borden Ave.in Sylmar, and Sunland Senior Center at 8640 Fenwick St.in Sunland. The Pomona Fairplex and the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster also opened stables for evacuated animals. The fire affected a number of schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, prompting the closures of 14 campuses in the fire area today.

Small-animal evacuation centers have been set up at the West Valley Animal Shelter at 20655 Plummer St. and the East Valley Animal Shelter at 14409 Vanowen St.
