House Passes Concealed Carry Reciprocity

In a tweet sent last night, Governor Andrew Cuomo blasted the measure, saying that it would allow people convicted of violent misdemeanors out-of-state to carry hidden weapons into NY.

"This bill ensures that all law-abiding citizens in our great country can protect themselves in the manner they see fit without accidentally running afoul of the law", Cox stated.

This bill amends the federal criminal code to allow a qualified individual to carry a concealed handgun into or possess a concealed handgun in another state that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms. "We are disappointed in the House for passing this reckless legislation and we urge the Senate to respect state laws, to protect the safety of our communities, and to reject this bill", Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement.

She said this even though it is a fact that concealed carry permit holders are among the most law-abiding of law-abiding Americans. The concealed-carry bill "is the culmination of a 30-year movement recognizing the right of all law-abiding Americans to defend themselves and their loved ones, including when they cross state lines", said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the group's political and lobbying arm.

The bill was also paired with an initiative to better report legal and mental health records to the background check system, an effort to win over Democrats.

Just months after the nation's deadliest mass shooting in Las Vegas, the House passed a bill that would expand gun rights. This bill requires a response to an appeal within 60 days.

City officials are constantly working to combat gun trafficking by criminals who bring firearms purchased in states with loose gun laws.

"This bill was the first piece of legislation I cosponsored after being sworn into Congress and I am glad to support its passage today", said a statement by Estes, who joined Congress in April after winning a special election to replace former Rep. Mike Pompeo.

A similar bill is now pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee. "The Congressman voted to make the job of our law enforcement agencies more hard and to allow untrained and potentially unsafe individuals to carry concealed weapons in New Jersey".
