"When Ingress first launched five years ago, we helped create a new genre of games that foster exploration, discovery, friendship and exercise", Ninatic CEO John Hanke said in a press release provided to Glixel.

But despite all the success, Niantic has never forgotten about Ingress. Since release, Ingress has been downloaded more than 20 million times and hosted hundreds of thousands of players at more than 2,000 real world events around the world states Niantic. From how it sounds, Prime will be a top-to-bottom reboot, with new art, a new story, and an entirely new design that can take advantage of updated mobile technology, most specifically including tech from Apple's ARKit, Google's ARCore, and a move to the base platform used in Pokemon Go.

As Niantic made a large amount of money from Pokemon Go, that money is being reinvested into resources such as additional staff and other resources.

For those who aren't familiar with the original Ingress, the game used location-based technology and AR to allow players to capture portals at various locations within their real-world environments, with teams playing as either the Enlightened faction or the Resistance faction. Although Pokemon Go didn't have quite the longevity that fans were hoping it might, the game is still drawing a crowd (as evidenced by the recent Global Catch Challenge), and Niantic has now been tapped to build a Harry Potter AR game.
