Moore accuser: Expert confirmed his 1977 yearbook signature

Republican Richard Shelby, the senior US senator from Alabama, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he did not vote for Moore and instead backed a write-in candidate. Nelson said that minutes after he signed the yearbook, he offered her a ride home.

On Saturday, Trump urged attendees at a rally in Pensacola, Fla., to vote for Moore, arguing Democrat Doug Jones won't support the Republican agenda. "Did you see that?" "You know the yearbook?" "Do it. Do it", Trump told the crowd. "There was a little mistake made", Trump said, shifting to a sing-songy voice.

"I think he's going to do very well", Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday.

Allred said she did not ask the handwriting analyst to examine the notation following the signature "because Beverly indicates that she added that to remind herself of who Roy Moore was, and when and where Roy Moore signed her yearbook".

Ms Nelson's legal team say they hired a handwriting expert, who they claim has verified Mr Moore's signature in the book as genuine. "The allegations (of sexual harassment) are significantly stronger than the denials".

"He's their total puppet and everybody knows it", Trump said during a wide-ranging speech that included riffs on the US immigration system and the nation's economic performance since he took office.

"This country, the future of this country, can not afford to lose a seat in the very, very close United States Senate".

Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct toward women when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s, including one woman who said he tried to initiate sexual contact with her when she was 14.

With just days to go before Tuesday's voting in Moore's Senate race against Democrat Doug Jones, his campaign has been roiled by this and other accusations of sexual misconduct decades ago.

At the same event, Moore referred to Native Americans and Asian Americans as "reds and yellows", and earlier this year he suggested the September 11 terrorist attacks were divine punishment.

Trump has endorsed Moore and praised him on Friday at a rally in Pensacola, Florida, near the Alabama state line. Trump himself faced multiple accusations of sexual assault during his presidential campaign, which he has denied.

As the race tightens, Jones has cranked up his attacks on Moore over the allegations and made those charges central to his argument that Moore is an unsuitable choice.

As Trump spoke about Moore, Moore tweeted Trump's comments to his own followers. Moore's allies unsurprisingly seized on the Friday's news as proof that Nelson had fabricated the story and yearbook inscription, though her adding a note about when and where Moore signed the yearbook hardly discredits her account, nor does it weaken the allegations of the eight other women who have come forward to accuse Moore.

Beverly Nelson is fighting for credibility Friday.
