This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week, and the Comal County Office of Public Health is using the occasion to remind residents that flu shots are still available.

Long before the beginning of the flu season, scientists try to determine which strains of the virus will be most prevalent during a given season and concoct a vaccine with those strains in mind.

"The fact that it's 10%, yes, that's quite a bit lower than usual, but it's usually only 40 to 60% effective".

Influenza can be a serious disease that leads to hospitalization and sometimes death. Regardless of race, age, gender or ethnicity, anyone can get sick from the flu.

Dr. Jeremy Rowell at Medical City Arlington says they've already seen severe cases of the flu, mainly in elderly people. This is why hand-washing is especially vital this year.

According to the CDC, flu activity most commonly peaks in the US between December and February.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department is tracking flu cases.

When news starts circulating that the flu shot may not work, some people skip it. Sweeney said that's the wrong choice. Many physicians, pharmacies, employers, schools, colleges and universities also offer flu vaccines.

This season, only injectable flu vaccines are recommended.

National Influenza Vaccination Week emphasizes the importance of receiving an annual flu vaccination. So be wise and get immunized against the flu.
