But it was Apple who threw the first punch in January, alleging that Qualcomm did not give them fair licensing terms.

According to new report from Cellular Insights, iPhone X models equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon x16 LTE modem get consistently better cellular speeds than the versions with Intel's XMM7480 modem. These new lawsuits are only a small portion of an ongoing issue between Apple and Qualcomm, where Apple has sought compensation through their own lawsuits. They also asked the court to order Apple to cease using the technologies.

You could find similar differences in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus units from previous year, as they, too, had modem chips made by both Qualcomm and Intel. CDMA models for Verizon and Sprint carried the Qualcomm component while the GSM variants for T-Mobile and AT&T had the Intel modem chip on board. At an especially weak signal strength of -120dBm, for instance, the Qualcomm modem was still downloading at around 67% faster than its Intel counterpart. Going down to the specifics, Qualcomm referred to the latest smartphone's multi-tasking interface. However this week, Qualcomm is updating those claims to include the iPhone X in its ban, which was not yet released to the public when the legal dispute started.

In one of the more recent lawsuits that Qualcomm filed, the company claimed that Apple gave Intel unprecedented access to proprietary Qualcomm chip technology.

The dispute between Apple and Qualcomm over patents is part of a wide-ranging legal war between the two companies. The same happened when Apple was asked to comment.

"All of these Palm inventions - owned by Qualcomm - have vastly improved the functionality of mobile devices and the user experience, and all of them are widely found in Apple products without license or permission."
Apple then filed a lawsuit with similar claims, and it has since continued to make such claims in several courts in the world. Broadcom offered $130 billion to buy Qualcomm in what would have been the biggest tech acquisition ever, but Qualcomm rejected it because it thought that the price was still too low.
