The "Deadpool" star has signed on to star in the live-action Pokémon movie "Detective Pikachu", according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Reynolds joins The Get Down star Justice Smith, who will get some blockbuster exposure in J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton.

Director Rob Letterman is helming the project, while the script has been penned by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch. Detective Pikachu will be called upon to search for the missing father of Smith's character, while Newton will portray a journalist who gives them a much needed assist.

Canada cancels Boeing fighter jet order amid trade spat
In the meantime, government and industry sources say the Liberals have settled on buying Australia's used jets from Australia. They would supplement Canada's existing CF-18 fleet until a new aircraft could be acquired.

For any other leading man, that synopsis would be a head-scratcher, but Reynolds is turning roles that wouldn't work for many of his peers into gold.

Despite that, "Detective Pikachu" is scheduled to start shooting in January.

Plus, with Reynolds cast as the lead, we would be hard-pressed to believe that Detective Pikachu will be anywhere near as sweet as Ash's Pikachu.

If you're wondering how Legendary is using Ryan Reynolds for this role, you can expect some performance capture.

Universal Pictures, Legendary's distribution partner, will release the live-action film outside Japan, where Toho has rights.

Before Reynolds shows up in Detective Pikachu's fedora, he will first return in to cinemas in Deadpool 2, which opens June 1, 2018.
