And registrations of alternatively fuelled vehicles rose 33.1% to 8,867 units, equating to 5.4% of the market - up from 3.6% past year.
According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new vehicle registrations fell 11.2% year-on-year to 163,541 last month, while business auto registrations fell by over 33%.
This follows the recent Budget, in which Chancellor Phillip Hammond announced he would be increasing taxes on brand new diesel cars in order to cut air pollution, rather than targeting older diesel cars, vans and trucks, that pump out far greater quantities of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants. Fleet registrations were down 3.9% to 1,228,967 units, with "Business" registrations down 5.4% to 92,226 units and private demand down 6.3% to 1,066,951 units.
British new vehicle registrations dropped 5 percent in the year to date, putting them on track for the first annual fall since 2011, hit by weaker consumer confidence and uncertainty over the future of diesel, an industry body said on Tuesday.
Demand for diesel-powered cars was down by 30.6 per cent, which the SMMT attributed to "anti-diesel messages" from the government.
Britain's auto market hit the brakes in November, as sales of new cars declined for the eight consecutive month.

However, their relatively high multiples do not necessarily mean their stocks are overpriced and not good buys for the long term. LSV Asset Management owned about 0.15% of Wal-Mart Stores worth $352,916,000 at the end of the most recent reporting period.
The fall marks the eight month of falling registrations in 2017.
It is the eighth month of decline and the industry said that the situation was a "major concern".
Sydney Loofe's Body Found, Family Says
Bliemeister said there has not been positive confirmation yet that it is Loofe's body, but there is a "strong belief" it is. Soon after her enthusiastic snapchat announcement that she was "ready for my date", 24-year old Sydney Loofe disappeared.
He also hit out at the Budget measures, saying more needs to be done to encourage people out of diesel vehicles - which were encouraged by previous governments as a cleaner alternative to petrol due to their lower Carbon dioxide emissions.
"Penalising the latest, cleanest diesels is counterproductive and will have detrimental environmental and economic consequences". "Widespread confusion has hurt the market over the course of the year, so drivers need clear information about what charges or other restrictions both the latest, Euro 6 diesels, and older vehicles might face so they can make better informed auto buying decisions".
