A status yellow wind warning is in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.
There are also warnings in place for snow and ice in neighbouring counties across Friday and Saturday, when in Lincolnshire it is expected to be cold with occasional wintery showers.
"When evening comes in, temperatures will drop and those showers will turn wintry in Donegal, north Mayo, Connemara, north Longford and north Midlands". It will turn increasingly wintry with biting north-west winds. Northwest winds will stay strong and gusty.
Forecasters say there is also an 80% chance of sleet or snow on Sunday afternoon and temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 2 degrees. The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared" weather warning for northern Scotland on Thursday.
The UK Met Office have named it Storm Caroline.
